Best places to visit in Milan, Italy-Duomo

If you’re taking a trip to Milan, in Italy, it’s worth going to see the Duomo.  The Cathedral was giant and beautiful!  My exact words when I walked in were, “Wow!”  

Tip:  You will need to have your shoulders and knees covered before entering the church or you can’t go in.  Shawls are great to throw over the shoulders on a hot day.  You can’t wear hats inside either.

The Cathedral is made of pink and white marble and has Gothic architecture.  It’s the second largest Catholic Cathedral in the world.  It’s located in central Milan.  There is a rooftop terrace where you can get a closer look at the spires and take pictures of the surrounding city.  The Cathedral took six centuries to build.  

Tip:  Sunset is the best time to view the Cathedral outside.  The pink and white marble really pops! 

You will notice some darker stones in and on the cathedral.  Those are stones that haven’t been cleaned recently.  Apparently, it is impossible to have the entire church completely cleaned at the same time because of its massive size.  They have to clean it in sections and rotate.  

Tip:  Don’t stand directly under the edge of the rooftops, you might get splattered by bird droppings.  

Once inside, there is a red light located above the altar where a nail is from the True Cross.   Basically, it is physical remains from the past.  

Tip:  Take as many pictures as you want.  Everything is beautiful in there. 

We did a tour where we were brought through the Cathedral, Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II (the world’s oldest shopping gallery), Sforza Castle, and ended at Leonardo da Vinci’s The Last Supper painting.  

It was all pretty amazing to see 🤩!  I’d really recommend doing the tour because you get to see four major attractions in Milan all in one day.  You also get to walk through Milan and really get a feel for the city.  This tour was one of the best that I have been on!
